Government “Mouthpiece” Ministry Neglected
It is an incontrovertible fact that the Ministry of Information of any government around the world is the sole
epicenter of promulgating, interpreting, analyzing and defending government's policies to the letter and last
atom of its strength for the common good of the government and the public.
Maximum support in all shapes and sizes, ranging from infrastructural, finance, materials and moral are
accorded to this ministry that often correct and polish blunders made by the government or public officials.
But as it appears here in Liberia, the Ministry of Information on Capitol Hill a stone throwing area from the
seat of the President, is virtually an empty skeleton or shell beating drums in praises and defenses of other
ministers that have lying in the cushion of comfort of utmost support from government.
Our inquiry proves that the Ministry's budget is very small to fully exhaust the enormous challenges and tasks
and what political pundits referred to as doing “dirty work” for government.
When reporter of this paper visited the Ministry to chat with Information Minister, Dr.Bropleh on the issue at
bar, office staff told the reporter that he was out.
However, when some of the staff in the ministry who later talked to this paper on the contract of anonymity,
expressed disenchantments about what they termed as government's apathetic posture against their ministry
they referred to as “mouthpiece.”
“Our minister talked and talked every week explaining government's policies to the world and sometimes
correcting the blunders of other public officials from the different sphere of government, we are unable to
cover the entire country in term of propagating government's positions on crucial national issues. Take a
look around here in this ministry, we do not have curtains to almost all of the windows of this building,” one of
the anonymous staff averred adding, “even there is in effect, no chairs in the minister's office for visitors.
Another staff pointed at the portion of the ministry's fence that is broken down from the front of the building
and then grieved about the entire outlook of the building.
Interestingly, the Ministry is located in the surrounding area of the Executive Mansion , the Temple of Justice
, and Capital Building , the seat of the Legislature and the Lands and Mines Ministry.
Nearly all of these public buildings had been or are undergoing renovation, while the “talking” Ministry of
Information lies virtually deprived and talking and talking.
Another area of concern that is often expressed in many quarters is that there are many public officials who
are bent on commandeering the function of the Ministry of Information.
“Each time you have government ministers discussing or making pronouncements about vital or sticky
government's policies which should have required an input, discussion or probably the approval or
knowledge of the Information Minister, Dr.Bropleh to avoid inconsistencies in interpretations and
promulgations”, Victor Toe on the University of Liberia asserted, adding, “government policies must be
coordinated for proper dissemination, instead of having every Tom and Dick wanting to speak on
government policies.”
Student Toe then urged President Sirleaf to pay greater attention to the dilemma government's “mouthpiece”
is facing, by ensuring that division of labor be the best practice of government.
